In late December 2010 the New York Post reported that New York Yankee pitching prospect Dellin Betances will be at spring training along side pitching great CC Sabathia.

This obviously brought a smile to my face since I had a chance to work 1 on 1 with Dellin back when he was the top pitching prospect here in NYC.

Go Grand Street Campus Wolves Baseball!!!

We called him “The Little Unit” as a reference to then Yankee pitcher Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson.

They share a common trait as they both are over 6’6 and throw 96 miles per hour.

And although my work with Dellin was brief I did see things in him that I knew would allow him to be successful in the
pros.

Besides his GOD given talents his biggest asset was that he was very coach-able and took action on advice given to
him.

I remember going over some hip flex-or mobility work with him and he immediately used the few drills I taught him with
his teammates before practices.

He also understood the need for expert training as he would travel out to NJ to train at the famous Parisi Speed Training
Center.

So what can you learn from all this?

It’s simple really.

Are you willing to put into action what a coach tells you or just become a library of information that’s never put to use.

And coaching info can come from a newsletter, a book, your trainer, your doctor or any source that you think is worth your time.

Does this mean that each piece of information or advice will be
right?

Of course not.

But you need to take action to see if things work or not.

And that is where the magic begins.

When you actually see what works and what does not work from your own personal experience.

There are way too many information seekers and not enough action takers.

Without question Dellin is an action taker and I can’t wait to go to The NEW Yankee Stadium for his first start in the big leagues

Which one are you?

Info seeker or Action taker?

[ Editor's Note: Fitness author Jon Benson shared this letter with me and gave me permission to share it with you. ]

Want to be leaner?

Good deal… here’s 5 tips that will help you along…

TIP 1
Ditch The Starch

Starches, such as rice, potatoes, some veggies, oats, etc. are often considered “health foods.”

While they can be healthy, they can also pack on stomach bodyfat like crazy if you overdo them.

As you may know, my “Every Other Day Diet” System (EODD) actually encourages you to eat starches and even sweets several days a week to get rid of excess weight:

http://www.jonbensonfitness.com/go/VirgilApon/eodd <– click.

( Some of you may see a survey here on how best to help with your bodyweight goals. )

Well… how does THAT work?

Simple: Timing is everything.

And we take a “weekly” approach to foods rather than a daily approach. This keeps your metabolism guessing. If your body cannot figure out what you’re up to, fatburning is that much more powerful. And you can get by with eating starches… at least a specific times on specific days.

But if you’re not going to do EODD, then you’ll have to wing it. And the best way to wing it is to simply cut starches out entirely for 4-8 weeks. Then slowly add them back a few days per week.

This is no where near as effective (or as fun) as the EODD method, but it will get you pointed in the right direction.

TIP 2
Can The Sodas

This one is really hard for me. I’ve been hooked on diet-soda on and off for years. When I go to get into top shape (like I am now) I have to get rid of the diet-sodas… yes, DIET-sodas. Need I say “real” sodas too? They are loaded with sugar.

Why diet-sodas? A recent study revealed that people who drank diet-sodas actually increased bodyfat when compared to those who drank sugar-sodas. What the… ??

Yep. Your body cannot be fooled by aspartame and chemicals. Sorry, but that’s the truth.

Here’s a personal story: When I cut out the diet-sodas my bodyfat drops like a rock in a pond of clear water.

And that’s what you need to be drinking: A quart of pure water per 50 lbs of bodyweight a day.

I mix it with lemon and a bit of Stevia (an herbal sweetener) and make lemonade. It’s wonderful!

TIP 3
Stay Hungry

Arnold’s first movie was “Stay Hungry” (well, after “Pumping Iron” that is). You cannot rest on your butt and stay hungry. You cannot think you’ve “arrived” and stay hungry.

It takes a special person to be hungry… and an even greater one to stay that way.

I want you to stay hungry in two ways: In how you workout and literally… stay a bit hungry before you go to bed. Not “starving”… just a bit hungry.

For your workouts, I have a great solution. If you pick up EODD you’ll get a limited shot at “7 Minute Body”… my combination of “7 Minute Muscle” and “The 7 Minute In-Home Workout” in one book… and for more than half off… but that’s a very limited deal. Gotta have EODD… you’ll need them both…

http://www.jonbensonfitness.com/go/VirgilApon/eodd <– click.

( Some of you may see a survey here on how best to help with your bodyweight goals. )

You see, progression — “forced” progression — is the best way to stay hungry. 7 Minute Body forces you to progress without thinking about it. Progression is built into the System.

As far as staying hungry at night? Check with your doctor and if he/she okays it take 500mg of potassium and 1000mg of magnesium/calcium a few hours prior to bed. This helps with the hunger pangs. Also, keep hard-boiled eggs in the fridge. If you get really hungry, eat one with half the yolk (toss the other half.) It keeps me full for an hour at least.

TIP 4
Cardio Clarity

Hours and hours of cardio a day is not the answer. However, you can do “light” cardio (i.e. brisk walking, or riding the bike at 60% of your max) just to burn off calories. That’s okay… and personally I don’t find it that boring if I’m watching a TV show. It does not interfere with my main fatloss exercise (weight training… YES!) and it burns off about 400 calories an hour.

What does work is early morning fasting cardio… but you only need 9-15 minutes. I explain the GXP Protocol (Modified) in the 7 Minute Body book, available only if you pick up EODD, and you can get it at more than half off:

http://www.jonbensonfitness.com/go/VirgilApon/eodd <– click.

( Some of you may see a survey here on how best to help with your bodyweight goals. )

TIP 5
Get Raw At Night

Raw veggies with your last meal and as a snack will really help your fatburning along. I started with red peppers because they’re sweet. Now I eat virtually every veggie raw at night without thinking about it. Give this a shot. The fatloss is well worth it.

—-> Note From Virgil: Jon is still giving away “Radical Fatloss Blueprint” along with EODD for a few more days. And he is giving a lucky few the chance to pick up the Supplement-Kit that comes with Radical Fatloss for almost 100 bucks off… the video and details are here:

By Nutritionist Josh Bezoni
http://virgilaponte.com/Josh-Bezoni.html

Here’s a common myth…

When you want to lose a lot of weight, you should cut calories for long periods of time, right?

WRONG.

Cutting calories magnifies nutrient deficiencies in your body. This results in severe cravings as your brain sends emergency “low nutrient signals” to your stomach to eat more food.

Problem is, most people end up eating more “nutrient-dead food” which causes cravings to completely spiral out of control. (If you feel hungry all the time, now you know why.)

To make matters worse, after about a week of dieting, your body is genetically programmed to fight back by lowering the hormones responsible for keeping your metabolism humming along (like the calorie-burning thyroid hormones). At the same time, it will decrease the “hunger hormone” leptin. (Double whammy.)

As a result, your fat loss will come to a screeching halt, lickity split.

At this point, to keep burning fat you’ll be forced to reduce your calories even lower, and/or do MORE exercise. (Not a fun problem to have… I’ve been there.)

So what’s the solution? One of my favorite sneaky tricks I call “The Thermal Burn Technique.”

You see, you really can fix your broken, calorie-burning furnace, reverse nutrient deficiencies (that cause cravings), and lose stomach fat all at the same time by simply eating the right kinds of food.

Make no mistake, calories from different types of food act very differently once inside your body. Some of them ignite what I call “Thermal Burn” and others are plain “Thermal Duds.” (For some reason, now I’m thinking of “Milk Duds” chocolate candies. As Homer Simpson would say, “Mmm…Duds.”)

Anyway, let’s start with fun ol’ fats.

FATS

Quality sources of good fats include oils such as flax, olive, and coconut along with avocados and nuts like walnuts, almonds and pistachios. Of course, we can’t forget about seafood sources like wild salmon and tuna, just to name a few.

Sure, fat is “fabulous” (did I really just say that?), but here’s the rub: your metabolic rate (or metabolism) will only increase by approximately 5% in response to eating fats.

Oh friggin’ boy, right?

This means that for every 1,000 calories of fat you eat, your body will burn only 50 of its own calories to digest and process the fat you just consumed. No big deal, right? (But remember, good fats help to “melt” body fat in other ways, so don’t discount their importance.)

Carbs

Carbohydrates often get a bad rap, but the key is to eat the right carbohydrates. Yes, as I’m sure you’re aware: there are right and wrong carbs. Most simple carbs are the wrong carbs—in fact, they are one of the top “Obesity-Additives” out there.

They tend to be highly processed and stripped of their nutrients. Examples of foods that contain wrong carbohydrates include soft drinks, candy bars, ice cream, donuts, cereals, processed corn byproducts (HFCS), and processed “white foods” like breads, pastas, and rice.

Remember, white foods are like white glue that keeps your belly fat locked in place.

Instead, stick to natural carb choices such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains.

Now let’s get to the brass tacks…

When you eat carbohydrates, your metabolic rate will increase by up to 10% (less for refined carbs like sugar that are easily digested, more for high-fiber choices). This means your body uses 100 calories to digest and assimilate 1,000 calories of carbs.

Is it getting hotter in here, or did my buddy Mike Geary just walk in with his shirt off?

PROTEINS

Protein has the highest Thermal-Burn of all foods, increasing your metabolism by up to a whopping 20-30%. POW! (That just happened…)

You see, protein is a very complex nutrient, so for every 1,000 calories of protein you eat, your body will use up to 300 calories to digest and process this macro-nutrient.

This means you’re only netting about 700 calories for every 1,000 calories you eat of protein.

So, you’re getting 300 “free calories.” (They’re gone… just like magic.)

Protein also helps to build muscle (along with specific types of exercise), and for every pound of muscle you add, you will burn approximately 50 extra calories per day. Five pounds will burn 250 calories per day. You get the picture.

Pretty cool, huh?

And here’s something even cooler… the “Thermal Burn” of some natural foods is so high that they don’t even register on the caloric scale. They’re “FreeFoods” that you can practically eat all day without gaining an ounce.

Now, to backtrack a bit; I’m not suggesting that you eat ONLY protein in an attempt to increase your metabolism. (Cluck, cluck… another chicken breast anyone?)

No, not at all.

But what I am saying is that eating specific “Thermal-Burn Meals” that combine precise amounts of protein, slow-absorbing carbs, and a dollop of good fat, (love that word…dollop), will help boost your mangled metabolism, crush cravings brought on by nutrient deficiencies, and slash unattractive abdominal fat.

The bottom line is that you’ll be able to eat MORE delicious food, but with a lower calorie impact. More bang for your buck. And I don’t know about you, but I LOVE eating, so this is a very exciting way accelerate your results.

[ Note: This article was written by fitness and nutrition author Jon Benson. I have his permission to share it with you. ]

One of the most surprising benefits I’ve discovered for being engaged to a gal from the Middle East, other than the vast cultural exchange, is the cooking.

Oh, yes ladies… my gal COOKS!

Which is good since I am a lousy cook. : )

Hanna enjoys it… and she brings a Middle Eastern flair to some really boring fitness/bodybuilding foods that I want to share with you today.

Here’s just two quick tips from Hanna on making the ultimate in “boring” foods — egg whites and tuna (yuck) — taste incredible.

TIP 1:
Lively Egg White Omelette

Let’s face facts: Egg whites suck. At least that’s what I USED to think until Hanna decided to experiment with my morning omelette.

Now I eat this stuff like it was candy.

Here’s what she does:

1. She cooks the veggies separate from the egg whites. You’d think this would be common sense, but I never did it and I’ve seen a lot of people just toss it all in together.

2. Add 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil with 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil to the veggies. This alone improved the taste tremendously.

3. Add 1/2 egg yolk to the veggies after cooking for 1 minute. This, again, is primarily for taste.

4. Garlic! If you love garlic, here’s your chance. Garlic ROCKS in egg white omelets.

5. Use Pam or another non-stick spray for the egg whites and cook them like you would a normal omelette. Then pour the almost-cooked veggies in the middle. Do the omelette dance.

6. Here’s the SECRET SAUCE… literally. This will sound nuts until you try it:

Shrimp Cocktail Sauce

Okay… Hanna’s bright, but this was an accident. She thought it was salsa. But I’ve NEVER gone back to salsa after stumbling on this incredible treat! I have no idea why it tastes so good, but it makes the omelette.

Try these tips and see if your egg white omelette doesn’t become your favorite meal of the day.

TIP 2:
Canned Tuna Extraordinaire

Again, I have the lovely Hanna to thank for this.

Like egg whites, I used to HATE canned tuna. Now, again, I can eat this every night without complaint.

Here’s what she does:

She cooks the veggies the same way as in the omelette above and then pours the tuna from the can into a skillet. That’s IT.

I’ve never had “tuna ala skillet” before… and I have no clue why this tastes so smooth and delicious, but it does.

If you hate canned tuna for being dry or tasteless, try this. You’ll never go back.

If you want 40 pages of recipes like this… very yummy and VERY healthy… then be sure to pick up my EODD “Favorite Foods” Dieplan.

Here’s more about it:

Several recent studies have pointed to the validity of doing very short cardio sessions (10 minutes) several times a day as being as beneficial… or even better… than one longer session. I agree, assuming you do some form of interval work in your cardio sessions. In fact, unless you want to drop a lot of bodyfat, you can get by with one 9-minute session a day if you do it right.

Quick Start: Try three super-short sessions with at least a 2-3 minute higher-intensity ‘burst’ in the middle. You do not have to go to the gym to do this. You can do this by walking stairs, stepping up and down on a low platform, or even walking outside. Let’s face it: 10 minutes is a lot easier on the brain than 30 minutes… and just as good.

For More Information: When you pick up my book The Every Other Day Diet you’ll have a chance to get my book 7 Minute Body for 1/3 the retail price for a limited time only.

In 7 Minute Body, I cover my personal 9 and 15-minute cardio sessions, my 3-minute abs workout (no kidding… I do not train my abs for more than 3 minutes!) and more.

Watch the presentation on my Every Other Day Diet homepage or just click here now to just pick up 7 Minute Body now.

One of the biggest myths out there is the myth that eating healthy costs too much.

Just the opposite… and I’ll prove it to you in three ways.

#1: Cash

Here’s some sample figures courtesy of my friend Scott Tousignant’s fitness blog…

2 medium size sweet potatoes $1 or… small fries from a fast food joint

2 red peppers $1 or… a can of pop

Bowl of oatmeal with fruit & protein powder $2 or… large bag of chips

6 Chicken Breasts $10 or… a sub combo from a fast food joint

18 eggs $3.50 or… a burger from a fast food joint

2 salmon fillets $15 or… large pizza

Loaded chicken salad (homemade) $3 or… bag of cookies

Large bag of oatmeal $3.50 or… 4 chocolate bars

Not much of a comparison, it is?

Yet the foods on the left would feed a family of two or more for 4-7 days… the foods on the right? 2-3 days if you live through it.

Tips to make the most expensive part of eating healthy — the cost of quality meats — go further include…

1. Use tofu fillers in chicken and beef recipes. Even if you hate tofu, you can barely taste the difference when combined properly.

2. Buy your meats in bulk online. You can find less expensive grass-fed beef and naturally-raised chicken and have it delivered to you if you live near a large city. If not, check the local farmers.

3. Eat meat only 3-4 times per week and use black beans with rice or inexpensive tuna for your other days. I eat tuna cooked in a skillet with lots of veggies and some olive oil almost every night and I LOVE the taste!

My book The Every Other Day Diet has over 40 pages of recipes in it to help you eat healthy and cheap… and you can still eat out and consume your favorite foods several times per week.

#2: Your Health

Do we ‘really’ need to talk about buy new (usually larger) clothes every year or two? Or about the health care costs associated with being even 20 pounds over your ideal weight, let alone more? How about the time you miss from work with excessive colds?

Eating healthy and taking care of your body adds years to your life… and for the record, the years eating poorly takes away from your life, on average, costs each American over 80,000 in medical expenses.

Want to add that to your food budget?

#3: The Big Picture

Anyone who has been fit knows the joy it brings… the freedom you feel from wearing whatever you want… the productivity you see from increased energy… the pace at which you move during the day.

Not only are these gifts priceless, but they are also massive cash-savers. Your productivity alone can add thousands to your bottom line each year, well off-setting any costs associated with eating quality food.

The Bottom Line…

Like any good accountant would suggest, you need to look at your ROI (return on investment) if nothing else.

What does investing in a better body, greater health, and vibrant energy do for your life? How can that actually translate into more income AND less expense?

You will be surprised.

Remember:
Don’t Quit. Get Fit!

P.S. If you want some tips on getting started with shedding that excess weight… go here for a short video… and prepare to take some notes! …

it’s freee….

Brought to you by The Truth About Abs

A Shocking Breakdown of a Fast Food Meal:
By Mike Geary

I wanted to show you a surprising breakdown of a typical fast food meal that MOST people don’t realize…

Here goes… Did you realize that when you eat a typical meal at a Fast Food joint, that you are basically eating almost entirely CORN (genetically modified corn too) … and no, there is really NOTHING healthy about eating almost all of your calories from corn!

Let me explain…

Let’s think about the typical fast food meal that somebody gets at a corner fast food joint… that common meal would be:

a cheeseburger
a side of fries
a soft drink (usually soda)

Surprisingly most people don’t realize they are taking in about 90-95% of their calories essentially from CORN when they eat this kind of fast food meal (can we really call it a “meal”). The other calories come from wheat and soy derivatives mostly… certainly nothing healthy there either! Let’s break it down…

The soda or other soft drink obtains 100% of it’s calories from a corn derivative — high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

The cheeseburger contains beef from a factory farm feedlot where the cattle ate almost entirely corn… also the cheese comes from milk from unhealthy corn-fed cows from factory farm feedlots… between the beef and the cheese, almost all of your calories are originally derived from corn, but just transformed in a way.

The bun on the burger contains corn derivatives including HFCS. The rest of the calories in the bun come from refined wheat flour and possibly a small amount of soybean oil. Basically, almost 100% of the calories from the burger come from corn, soy, and wheat.

Now comes the fries…

Most of the calories in the fries come from the oil that’s soaked into them from deep frying in either corn oil or soybean oil (hydrogenated usually). NOT good!

So basically, the ONLY calories in this typical fast food meal that don’t come from corn, soy, or wheat is the potato portion of the fries… and of course when potatoes are deep fried in oil, they create cancer-causing acrylamides.

You wonder how anybody can eat even one bite of fast food knowing these facts… or maybe they DON’T know these facts…and that’s the problem.

Now you can see how 90-95% of the calories in a typical fast food meal actually come mostly from corn, soy, and wheat derivatives… and certainly NOT healthy versions either!

A few weeks ago, I saw a really entertaining documentary about how CORN has pretty much become the majority of our food supply due to the economics of it.

The documentary was called King Corn, and I’d highly recommend picking the DVD up from Amazon and watching it… highly entertaining, but also pretty scary how we let economics ruin something as important as our food supply.

Another documentary that I think EVERYONE needs to watch is Food Inc. This is a must see, and after seeing both of these documentaries, your views on what you eat and our horrendous food supply will change.

This is why I make an effort to try to get almost 100% of my food from local farmers markets, health food stores, and a local farmer where I purchase all of my grass-fed meats, farm fresh eggs from free roaming hens, raw grass-fed milk, and tons of produce.

Comments: This is an eye opener to say the least. All I can really say is if you care about your health you need to really find quality food especially if you eat milk, eggs or meat. Unfortunately the worst place to go is your local supermarket with the exception of a few like whole foods. You need to find a farm program where you can get high quality food like free range eggs, chicken and grass fed beef. I’m fortunate to have a few quality sources here in Brooklyn NY like The Traditional Nutrition Guild as well as the Saturday farmers market here in Williamsburg Brooklyn.

Caution:

This sounds like a silly question, but it’s really the most important question you can ask:

“What REALLY makes me increase my bodyfat?”

Is it too many calories? Sure. That’s one part. But I know people who can eat 4-5K calories a day and not add an ounce.

Is it dietary fat? Rarely if ever.

Fat is necessary to melt bodyfat. It is true that fat has more calories per gram than protein or carbs, but let’s look at this logically:

40% protein; 40% carbs; 20% fat = 40% fat; 40% protein; 20% carbs

So… no. Increasing your dietary fat does not mean you’ll get fatter…

UNLESS… ready?

Your insulin levels are too high.

Elevated insulin is not only the prime cause of diabetes and a sign of being hypoglycemic, but it’s also the prime numero uno reason people get fat.

And insulin is stimulated most by too many carbohydrates… even the so-called “healthy carbs!”

HOWEVER… ready again?

You can still eat carbs… you do not need a “low-carb” dietplan every day in order to keep your insulin and bodyfat low.

You just have to know what TIME to eat the carbs.

There’s a time and place for everything and carbs are no exception.

I have a presentation here that tells you more about how important timing is and how you can eat your carbs (even sweets) and shed bodyfat…

… here:

The EODD System <--carb-friendly dietplan

That being said:

If I had to cut one thing out of my diet for 1-4 days it would definitely be carbs.

I need fat… fat helps melt bodyfat… and I have trained my body to use its own fat-stores for fuel.

( See how on the linked-page above )

I DEFINITELY need protein… and so do you.

Protein speeds up thermogenesis, or your body’s own fat-burning heat factory.

Protein also blunts your appetite so you naturally eat less.

Some carbs are healthy… and I do not recommend you cut out low-sugar fruits and green veggies… you need that stuff.

But you don’t need grains, breads, etc.

At least for a few days.

THEN… you need them… but only after you do two things.

Find out more here:

The EODD System <--carb-friendly dietplan

Remember: Don’t Quit. Get Fit!

P.S. My favorite “Feed Meal” (that’s what I call meals where I eat a lot of calories and carbs) is this:

Small serving of protein (1/2 my normal serving size) like chicken, tuna, etc.

     Brown rice or baked potato

Slice of pecan pie (or Key Lime pie… yum.)

Then later that day I’ll have a few slices of New York-style pizza.

The next day I’m LEANER. It never fails.

The only time this can fail is if you do not set your body UP to receive these carbs and some junk food.

I call this my “Real World Favorite Foods Dietplan.” That’s not the name of my System but it could be! That’s exactly what it is.

I love it… so will you…
