Are walking lunges useless for fat burning?

Here’s what Jon Benson wrote about walking dumbbell lunges with my comments after:

Walking Dumbbell Lunges Are Useless!!!

(How to perform walking lunges on You Tube)

Okay ladies, this one is for you… although I see guys do this exercise as well.

This is where you take a pair of dumbbells and kneel with one leg, then the other, and so-on, walking around the gym as you go. The idea behind this exercise is to work the butt, and to some extent the thighs… but it’s a joke.

It’s something invented by trainers who should know better.

If you want to build and tone your butt, exercise one leg at a time.

Lunges are a great exercise for this, but save your energy.

Do them on a Smith Machine or with a barbell. Work one leg at a time, too. Do not alternate legs. This just wears you out aerobically before it has a chance to get to your glutes.

Here’s how I perform lunges:  On a Smith Machine, with pretty heavy weights… one leg at a time.

I will do 2-3 sets, or do them in my 7 Minute Body-style workout fashion.

I will finish one leg (and one butt cheek) before moving to the other leg.

Why? Again, to focus on the muscle more intensely and to avoid turning a leg/butt workout into a cardio session.

I cover exactly how to work the butt area for the best results in 7 Minute Body and 7 Minute Muscle, found right here:

My Comments :)

Now personally I love walking lunges and adding weight via dumbbells, barbells or a weighted vest makes them even better.

It’s certainly not a joke as Jon puts it.

For one they serve as an excellent functional exercise and improve your strength, stability and balance which can not be said for smith machine lunges.

Another benefit is that they are great for opening up for your hip flexor which is a problem for many people.

Should you not follow Jon’s advice?

That’s not really the point…

He’s looking at it purely from a fat burning point & time saving point of view and I’m looking at it from a function point of view.

And I’m sure he’s done a few walking lunges in his day :)

And I’ve done a few smith lunges in my day as well :)

I agree with both of you. I always believed that you MUST have a good reason (based on goals) for using an exercise in your training program. Have a great New Year!

Most wisdom today says not to rely too heavily on machines. I think it’s a good exercise, especially as described with dumbbells or a weight vest. I often alternate legs when exercising, but sometimes will do one leg at a time.

Thanks for sharing Earnie. The smith lunge while not my favorite is still another tool as you never know when you are going to need it. These days I’ve been using the rear leg elevated split squat. A move I picked up from Mike Boyle: Check out the video here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CKl8PvLajs

You know I’ve never been a big fan of Lunges, But they have their place. Just one of many tools we have at our disposal. I tend to use them as a muscle stamina challenge finisher (i.e. walking 100 yards w/ weight). Or at the end of a sequence of harder leg exercises (break down e.g. piston, tiger bend sqt., split sqt., lung). Or as part of a squat thrust type move.

Thanks for sharing Sgt Fitness :)

I also love the walking 100.

When I hit the track for a run I like to finish with that :)

Like you said they have their place (just another tool in the fitness tool box)

I am with you. What is your goal? Then make the BEST exercise selection for the time you have in the gym. Walking lungs could be a great exercise as along as you have progressed to that exercsie and all muslces are firing.
