Saturday morning stair training with mom

There’s a running joke with my friends that if I’m every missing go check the stair cases.

The reason is that when I bring friends to hit the stairs with me the exercises can be grueling.

Especially advanced stuff like buddy carries, hops or sprints.

Well today I brought my Mom with me and she had no problem doing 3 rounds of 7-8 flights.

I simply told her to walk up until you feel you need a break.

When you need a break simply stop, take the elevator down and rest up till I come down.

I on the other hand did 3 sets to the 21st floor:

Set #1: Walking with my 20 pound X-Vest

Set #2: Walking every other step with my 20 pound X-Vest

Set #3: Off with the X-Vest and a run up to the 10th floor and then finished walking up to 21.

Check out the X-Vest below which is training tool I highly recommend especially for NGN type workouts:

This workout took only 22 minutes but had me drenched in sweat.

Next it was off to breakfast at one of my favorite organic restaurants here in Brooklyn, NY.

I had the omelette with goat cheese, mixed greens, carrot juice and coffee.

My mother had a veggie omelette, carrot juice and chamomille tea.

Next for us was a 30 minute walk and then some shopping at the weekly farmers market.

A great morning indeed :)

I love to talk about my mom exercising because I get a lot of questions on what one can and can’t do.

I even get trainers telling me that stairs or exercises like squats or lunges are no good for most trainees as they are too dangerous and intense.

While this can be true most people are just looking at what I do and forget that progression is the key.

If you can’t run stairs then you can walk them like my 64 year old mother does.

If you can’t do a full body weight squat then you do a partial squat and not a leg press like many trainers recommend.

If you can’t run up a hill then you walk.

Progression and modification are always the key.

Once you get that concept you’ll be surprised of what you can and can not do.
