Body Weight, Free Weights or Machines: Which is Better?

Brought to you by

First of all hope you had a great weekend.

Here in Brooklyn we had great weather and I got a chance to enjoy some sunshine and catch some nice rays.

Contrary to what many believe getting sun is a healthy thing as long as you don’t let yourself fry :)

Now back to my original topic:

From my articles many might think that I am against gyms or machine training but it simply is not true.

Here is a question I addressed on the topic that will explain my position:

    Hi Virgil,
I had a great week end too!
In response to the body weight, free weights, or machines post…as a veteran 20+ years as an aerobic instructor/personal trainer in various gyms in Ventura County, California and for the US Navy, I am in total agreement with you. All these types of workouts are highly beneficial. I currently do stairs and some free weights and lots of body weight exercise. I love the stairs! No jarring and no cost! It is a fabulous way to burn calories and rev your heart!
As for body weight work, you can do it ANYWHERE! At any time! I even do rear leg raises and standing leg curls while washing dishes and brushing my teeth. Weirdo huh…The thing is…just MOVE!
I’m a photographer and sometimes I spend hours a day sitting at my computer editing. I try to get up every 30 minutes or so and do 25 Jumping Jacks and wall pushups, squats and lunges. I put on my leg weights and do leg extensions while sitting here working. I could go on but I won’t.
I’ve always been a fan of nontraditional workouts and I love all your tips and quick workouts. Keep em coming! And thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the great post Deborah. And I love your idea of getting up every 30 minutes to do something. I’m on a computer a lot and need to get up myself and do that. Great to hear you have a great weekend now lets follow that up with a great week. I’m off for my morning walk which will help to start me off.

Take care and thanks for sharing.

    Virgil :)
